Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F / 205°C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix 2 cups of all-purpose flour, ¼ cup of sugar, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of kosher salt. Rub in ¼ cup of cold cubed unsalted butter until crumbly.
  3. Beat ½ cup of whole milk with 1 large egg. Stir into the flour mixture just until moistened.
  4. Knead gently 4-5 times on a floured surface. Divide into 8 balls and flatten to ¾in / 2cm thick.
  5. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a 12in / 30cm skillet over medium heat. Cook the breads in batches for 2 minutes per side, until lightly browned.
  6. Transfer to the baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until the centers are set.
